You don't need an audience. You need a body of work.
Audiences are loaned to you. Bodies of work are owned.
Almost every piece of advice you'll read about building in public is actually about building an audience. Gain followers. Grow the email list. Optimize the post. Run the funnel. Get on the podcast.
Then what?
The unspoken assumption is that the audience becomes leverage you can convert into something. A book deal, a course, a consulting gig, a launch. Most of the time, it doesn't. Most audiences plateau, scatter, or migrate to the next platform. The number you spent two years building goes to zero in eighteen months when whatever app you used dies or changes its algorithm.
A body of work doesn't have that problem. Fifty essays you wrote, sitting on a domain you own, indexed in search engines, linkable, citable, downloadable, ten years later still readable. That's an asset. The number of people reading them this morning is mostly irrelevant. The work is doing the work whether anyone's there or not.
The asymmetry: audience-building is loud and short-lived. Body-of-work-building is quiet and permanent.
Most people do the loud thing because the loud thing produces the dopamine of immediate metrics. The quiet thing produces nothing for years. Then it produces almost everything.
What you should be optimizing for is not how many people read this thing today. It's how many people will be able to find this thing five years from now. Today is a vanity metric. Five years is a real one.
Three things I try to remember:
The audience that matters is the one that finds your body of work in year three because your body of work is good. Not the one you persuade to follow you in week two.
If you stop posting tomorrow, your audience disappears within a quarter. Your body of work doesn't.
The platforms you build on will die. The platform you build of (your domain, your essays, your code, your open log) won't.
Stop chasing followers. Start stacking work. The followers come from the work being there. The work doesn't come from the followers.
Audiences rent. Bodies of work own.
