A practice has no off-switch. Habits do.
A habit is something you do. A practice is something you are.
Most self-help conflates them. Build the habit of waking up at 5am. Build the habit of writing every day. Build the habit of going to the gym. The framing is action-level. You either did the action or you didn't. The streak is the measure. Break it and the structure collapses.
A practice is identity-level. A doctor doesn't do the habit of medicine. They are a doctor. They miss a day. They get sick. They go on vacation. The next morning they're still a doctor. Nothing about the identity wobbled.
The difference matters because under pressure, the identity holds and the action breaks.
Habits are the first thing to fall when life gets weird. A bad week, a sick kid, a breakup, a deadline. The streak is gone. The streak is gone because the streak was the whole point. There is nothing underneath it to bring you back.
A practice has nothing to break. You miss a Tuesday. You're still a writer on Wednesday. You skip the gym for ten days because of a flu. You're still someone who trains. The pause was always inside the practice; the practice didn't end because of it.
This sounds soft. It isn't. The practice frame is harder than the habit frame, because the practice never lets you off. There is no rest day from being a builder. You can not-build for a week. You can not stop being a builder.
What this looks like in operation:
Stop counting streaks. Start describing yourself in present tense. I'm a writer. I'm a builder. I train.
Stop measuring the doing. Start measuring whether you came back.
Stop building habits. Start building the kind of person whose week looks like the practice without thinking about it.
The point of a practice isn't never missing. The point is that missing doesn't mean anything.
Habits are something you protect. A practice is something you are. The first one breaks. The second one doesn't have the option.
